The town copper built, wired by people who know it.

Magna grew up in the shadow of the Oquirrhs, around a mill that ran on more electricity than most of the state used at the time. A century later, a lot of that housing is still standing on Main Street — and a lot of it is still running on panels that were never meant for a heat pump, a hot tub, and two EVs. That's the work we do here.

Part One

From Pleasant Green to a company town

Mormon pioneers reached this stretch of the valley floor in 1851, but the settlement that became Magna didn't really take shape until 1868, when farmers put down roots at the base of the Oquirrh Mountains and called the place Pleasant Green. It was an honest name for what it was: irrigated fields, orchards, a schoolhouse, and a long view east across the valley. The Salt Lake County Court made it official on July 21, 1874.

For a generation, that was the whole story. Then the mountain behind town turned out to be full of copper.

In 1906, D.C. Jackling founded the Utah Copper Company and began construction of the Magna Mill on the bench above Pleasant Green — a concentrator built to process low-grade ore in volumes nobody had attempted before. Utah Copper would later become the Kennecott Copper Corporation, and the mill it built rewrote the town. Farm lanes became mill roads. The company laid out housing for workers, and families arrived from Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Serbia, and Finland to fill it. Pleasant Green quietly became Magna, an industrial town with a Main Street, a theater, and a payroll tied directly to the price of copper.

Part Two

How the power actually got here

Magna is unusual among Utah towns in that industrial electricity arrived before household electricity did — and at a scale that had nothing to do with lightbulbs.

Jackling's whole bet was mass-processing ore so poor that only enormous, continuously running machinery could make it pay. That meant crushers, ball mills, and flotation cells drawing power around the clock. The mill's demand was a large fraction of everything being generated in the region at the time, and the utilities that would eventually consolidate into Utah Power & Light in 1912 grew, in part, on the back of loads like this one — hydro plants in the canyons and coal-fired steam plants strung together to keep the Oquirrh operations running without a flicker.

Once high-voltage lines reached the bench, the town below got wired almost as a byproduct. Company housing, the storefronts on Main, the theater, the schools — Magna went electric decades before many rural Utah communities did, because the infrastructure was already humming past the front porch.

Today that same territory is served by Rocky Mountain Power, the PacifiCorp utility that traces its line straight back to Utah Power & Light. Distribution runs overhead through most of the older grid west of 8000 West, with underground service in the newer subdivisions pushing out toward the lake and along the 2700 South corridor.

The practical upshot for a homeowner: your service drop, meter base, and everything past it are your responsibility, and in Magna that boundary is often a century-old weatherhead on a house that has been added onto three times. When we quote a service upgrade here, the coordination with Rocky Mountain Power for the disconnect and reconnect is half the job.

Part Three

Why this matters inside your walls

Magna's housing stock is not one thing. It's three or four things stacked on top of each other, and each layer fails differently.

1910s – 1930s

Company houses & Main Street brick

Knob-and-tube in the attic, 60-amp fuse service at the back door, ungrounded two-prong outlets, and decades of "temporary" additions spliced into junction boxes that were never meant to carry them. Insurance carriers increasingly won't write these without a rewire.

1950s – 1970s

Postwar ramblers off Pleasant Green

100-amp panels with no room left, aluminum branch wiring in the mid-'60s to early-'70s builds, and Zinsco or Federal Pacific panels that don't reliably trip. These are the calls we take most often — usually after a breaker gets warm.

1990s – today

New builds toward the lake

Sound wiring, but sized for a different decade. Add a Level 2 EV charger, a heat pump, a shop out back on Bacchus, and a 200-amp panel gets tight fast. Load calcs and subpanels, not guesswork.

There's also the ground itself. Magna sits close enough to the Wasatch Fault system that the March 2020 event put its epicenter essentially in the neighborhood. We still find meter masts pulled out of plumb, service conduit cracked at the roof line, and unsecured panels in garages from that shaking. If your house rode out 2020 and nobody ever looked behind the cover, that's worth an hour of somebody's time.

Add the dust and mineral load that comes with living downwind of an active industrial operation, and outdoor equipment here corrodes faster than it does across the valley. Weatherproof boxes, gasketed covers, and stainless hardware aren't upsells in Magna — they're the difference between a five-year install and a twenty-year one.
