What a Level 2 charger actually changes

That's genuinely the whole pitch.

We install hardwired units and NEMA 14-50 receptacles both. Hardwiring is the cleaner, more permanent job and is required by some manufacturers at higher amperages; a receptacle gives you the flexibility to unplug the unit and take it with you if you sell the house. We give a firm number after we've seen the panel and measured the run — not over the phone from a guess. If your panel is a 200A service sitting on the garage wall, you're almost certainly in the first row.

The three things that move the price

Distance. Copper is expensive and so is conduit. A charger on the wall directly behind the panel is a fraction of the cost of one on the far side of a detached garage.

The route. An unfinished basement ceiling we can run through is easy. A finished basement, a stucco exterior, or a slab crossing is not.

Panel capacity. Two free breaker slots is not the same as having capacity. The load calculation decides, and sometimes the honest answer is that the panel needs to be upgraded first.

How the job runs

1. Site visit

We open the panel, read the main breaker, count what's actually on it, and walk the route to your parking spot with a tape measure. Ten or fifteen minutes, usually.

2. Load calculation and a firm number

We work out whether the service carries the new continuous load. You get one price that covers wire, breaker, conduit, mounting, permit, and inspection — not a low number with surprises stapled on later.

3. Permit and install day

We pull the permit, then do the work. A straightforward run is typically a single day. Panel upgrades take longer and involve a power shutdown, which we schedule with you well in advance.

4. Inspection and first charge

The inspector signs off, we energize the circuit, and we plug your car in and watch it pull current before we leave. If it doesn't charge, we're not done.


Questions we get asked in every driveway

Do I really need a permit for an EV charger?

Yes. Adding a 240-volt circuit is permitted electrical work, and it gets inspected. Anyone offering to skip the permit to save you a few dollars is telling you something important about how they do the rest of the job. An unpermitted circuit can also give your insurer an opening if something ever goes wrong in that garage.

Can my 100A panel handle a charger?

Sometimes — it depends entirely on what else is on it. A 100A service feeding a gas furnace, gas water heater, and gas range has far more headroom than one running electric heat and an electric dryer. The load calculation gives the real answer. Where the panel genuinely can't take it, the options are a service upgrade, or dialing the charger down to a lower amperage — many units let you set a lower current limit, which charges slower but may fit within your existing capacity. We'll lay out both.

What does the whole thing cost?

For a home with an existing 200A panel near the garage, a standard Level 2 install in Utah typically runs $800 to $1,800. If the panel needs upgrading to carry the charger, the total goes up beyond that range — how far depends on the service work involved, which is why we won't put a number on it until we've done the load calculation and seen the panel.

Hardwired or a 14-50 outlet?

Hardwired is the more robust connection and is what higher-amperage units require. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle lets you unplug the charger and take it with you, which matters if you might move. If you go the receptacle route, we install an industrial-grade one — the cheap ones are not built for a connection that carries 40 amps for hours every single night, and they're a known failure point.

How long will I be without power?

For a straightforward charger circuit, only briefly — long enough to land the breaker safely. A full panel upgrade means the house is down for a good part of the day while the service is swapped and the utility reconnects. We tell you which one you're in for before we book the date, so you can plan around it.

Can you install a charger before my car arrives?

We can, and it's a good idea to at least get the site visit done early — if a panel upgrade turns out to be part of the story, you want to know that while the car is still on order, not the week it shows up. We can wire and energize the circuit ahead of delivery and come back to commission the unit against the car when it lands.
