Salem grew up around a spring-fed pond and an eight-mile canal dug out of the Spanish Fork River. Today it's 12,704 people, a stack of new rooftops off Loafer Mountain Parkway, and a whole lot of houses whose wiring was never asked to run a heat pump, a hot tub, and two EVs at once. That's the part we handle.

Part One

From Pond Town to a city of tree-lined streets

Almost everything about how Salem is wired today traces back to how Salem was built — in three distinct waves, roughly a century apart.

Before there was a Salem, there was water. Native peoples knew the place as Summer Spring; the settlers who followed called it Pond Town, for the spring-fed pond that still sits at the middle of the city. In 1851, David Fairbanks and David Crockett came up from Payson looking for farmable ground, threw a dam across the water to get irrigation running, and pulled a harvest in that same first season. Then, worried about raids, they wintered back in Payson — a false start that makes 1851 the founding and 1852 the real beginning.

By 1856, families from Palmyra had given up on drought and alkaline soil and moved to Pond Town wholesale. Between 1856 and 1858 they raised a fort of adobe and lumber, and for the next dozen years or so that fort was the town — the nucleus everything else grew out of, right up until about 1870.

The name changed in 1869. Lyman Curtis, the settler who drove the eight-mile canal down from the Spanish Fork River, had been born in New Salem, Massachusetts, and the town took his hometown's name. Incorporation came as a town in 1886 and as a city on May 10, 1920.

For the next fifty years, Salem was a farming town and proud of it: wheat and grains, tomatoes, peas, sugar beets. Commerce clustered along U.S. Highway 91 — the Salem Mercantile Company, a barber shop, a drugstore, a saloon. Then the 1950s arrived and the arithmetic flipped. Orchards and beet fields became subdivisions, and Salem shifted from agricultural village to bedroom community without ever really losing the small-town feel that people move here for.

That growth hasn't stopped. Salem Central, near SR-198 and Loafer Mountain Parkway, is the current chapter — mixed-use, residential over retail, with trails and open space held back on purpose. It's a new kind of building for Salem, and it comes with a new kind of electrical load.

Part Two

How the power got here — and who keeps it on

Salem's electricity story is unusual for Utah, and it's worth knowing before you plan a panel upgrade or a solar tie-in.

Power came to this part of Utah Valley in the early 1900s, on the back of the Strawberry Valley Project — a federal reclamation effort that moved water through the Wasatch and generated electricity on the way. The South Utah Valley Electric Service District has been delivering that power to the area ever since, and still mutually serves Salem today.

The local piece is Salem City Utilities, the municipal utility that serves the city and the rural stretches of Utah County around it. It was formally created by the Utah State Legislature in 1985 as an Electric Service District — and it remains the only district of its kind in Utah. Salem doesn't generate its own power; it buys wholesale and resells to end users, and it belongs to the Utah Municipal Power Agency (UMPA), the joint agency that secures reliable, economical supply for its member cities.

Practically speaking, that structure matters to homeowners in two ways. First, meter work, service upgrades, and new drops go through the city rather than a large investor-owned utility — which usually means a shorter chain of phone calls, but a schedule you have to plan around. Second, Salem City Utilities offers net metering, so residents with solar or other renewables can push excess production back onto the grid. If you're sizing a system, size the service and the panel for it at the same time. Retrofitting a main panel after the array is on the roof is the expensive way to do it.

I. — The farmhouse era

Panels and wiring that predate everything you plug in

The older homes around the pond and off Main Street were wired for a refrigerator, a radio, and a few lamps. A modern kitchen alone can outdraw the original service. What that looks like day to day:
