The wire under the Redwood Road corridor is older than most of the houses it feeds.

Taylorsville grew up in bursts — a log cabin west of the Jordan River in 1848, an interurban rail line in 1913, then two solid decades of subdivisions poured out along Redwood Road. Every one of those bursts left something behind in the walls.

We work the whole city: the older lots near 4800 South, the 1970s streets around Millrace Park, the newer builds out past the Salt Lake Community College campus. Panels, rewires, service calls, permits pulled through Taylorsville's own building department.

How the city got here

From Harker's Settlement to a city of its own

In November 1848, Joseph and Susanna Harker put up a log cabin on the west side of the Jordan River. The following year Samuel and John Bennion came south with other families and took shelter in the river bluffs, and the cluster of homes there picked up a name: Harker's Settlement. What those first settlers spent their energy on was not building — it was water. They cut irrigation ditches to pull the river across dry ground and coax wheat, corn, and vegetables out of it. The town's shape was decided by where the water could be made to go.

By the 1870s the settlement had a formal name. Taylorsville, after John Taylor, third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A modest business district took root where Redwood Road crosses 4800 South — a corner that, well over a century later, is still doing more or less the same job.

Then came the rails. The Bingham-Garfield Railroad arrived in 1910, and in 1913 the electric Salt Lake Inter-Urban line strung its wire through, stitching the farms into the wider valley. During World War II, Camp Kearns — a U.S. Army Air Corps training base just to the west — swelled so fast that it briefly stood as Utah's third-largest city. The farms had company.

Taylorsville spent nearly 150 years as somebody else's map before the people living here decided to draw their own. Incorporated July 1, 1996 — Utah's centennial year

The real transformation ran from the late 1950s through the 1970s. Subdivisions marched up and down the Redwood Road corridor, and homes and storefronts filled in ground that had been under irrigation a generation earlier. But the city still wasn't a city. That took a grassroots push from residents who wanted local control over their own streets, zoning, and services. On July 1, 1996 — a hundred years after Utah became a state — Taylorsville was officially incorporated out of the Taylorsville–Bennion CDP and a piece of the Kearns metro township.

What sits here now is a working suburb of the capital: houses, businesses, and busy commercial stretches held in a fairly deliberate balance, with a city hall that answers its own phone.

How the power got here

Eighty-one to sixteen: the thirty-five year walk from Salt Lake City to Redwood Road

Electrification in Utah started in Salt Lake City in 1881, and at first it did one thing: it made light. Streets, storefronts, public buildings. It took the technological leap of the 1890s — alternating current and the transformer — before power could travel any real distance without bleeding away, and that leap is what eventually put a wire on a pole out here. Once distance stopped being the enemy, a single generating plant could serve a whole valley instead of a few blocks.

Electricity reached the Taylorsville area in the early 1900s, and by 1916 it was available along Redwood Road. Along the way it stopped being just light: it moved streetcars and interurban lines, and it changed what a day's work could produce in Utah's mines.

    Founded September 6, 1912 as a subsidiary of Electric Bond and Share Company (EBASCO), it absorbs dozens of smaller Utah-area electric companies to build a single unified "super power system."

    Overhead wire crosses the community. Electricity is now transportation, not just illumination.

    The successor to Utah Power & Light serves Taylorsville through high-voltage transmission lines, substations, and upgraded distribution. Permits for electrical upgrades and installations go through Taylorsville's own building department, under local code and inspection.

Most of Taylorsville's residential units went up in that thirty-year window, and the median home here is about 44 years old. That's not old enough to be a museum piece and not new enough to be built for how anyone actually lives now. It means a house wired for a television, a furnace, and a kitchen is being asked to carry an EV charger, a heat pump, a home office, and a garage full of tools.

None of this is exotic. It's just the arithmetic of an aging housing stock, and it shows up on almost every service call we run west of the river.

A 100-amp panel was generous in 1978. Add a Level 2 charger and a heat pump and you are out of capacity before you've added a single circuit.

Two-prong outlets, no ground

Common in the older stock near 4800 South. Swapping in a three-prong receptacle without a ground path doesn't fix it — it hides it.

Overloaded branch circuits

Kitchens and garages from this era typically got one circuit where current code expects several. The breaker trips because it's doing its job.

Missing GFCI and AFCI protection

Baths, kitchens, garages, and exterior outlets predate the requirement. It's one of the least expensive and most consequential upgrades available.

Discontinued panel brands

Certain breaker panels installed during the boom years have known failure histories. Worth identifying before you plan anything else.
